5 Minute Volcano Project for Kids

Children are born with all the curiosity that they will ever need. It will last a lifetime if they are fed upon a daily diet of ideas. – Charlotte Mason

Danica, my curious little babe, has had a recent fascination with volcanoes. We have done so much research on volcanoes lately you would laugh on how much I have learned myself! Dani has always been so curious and asks a million questions about everything, although exhausting to have to answer all the questions (ha!) I absolutely love her curious personality!

Blessed are the curious for they shall have adventures.

We love spending time outdoors, so I thought it would be a fun activity to create a volcano for Dani and her baby brother sidekick to see in action. The setup of this activity took 5 minutes and we watched the volcano erupt for about 20 minutes thereafter! Both the kids enjoyed watching the eruption over and over again. It entertained them for a good amount of time. Can we say #momwin ?

Dani is ready with all her supplies & Dylan is praying that big sister packed some snacks in that shopping cart, ha!

I wanted to make sure with this activity that both kids were involved in the process from A-Z , especially Danica . I started with showing Danica what each ingredient was and walked her through each step in the process. It was super easy for her to understand and Dylan helped her with it too, which made it super adorable & fun for him too. It makes it more fun for them that way, in my opinion. I highly recommend doing this activity outdoors . Also, I suggest taking all of the supplies with you to the designated area. Danica’s play shopping cart came in handy with towing all of the items we needed out to our backyard.

Things Needed:

  • Baking Soda (4-6 tbs)
  • Water
  • Vinegar (8 oz)
  • Washable Paint (1/2 oz – 2 oz) – Highly recommend washable paint in order to avoid any stains! Also, we love glitter, so we used this to paint to add some bling to our volcano: Crayola Glitter Washable Paint
  • Dish Soap (1 tbs)
  • Cup
Dylan is inspecting the ingredients or he is still looking for snacks, ha!

Steps

  1. Fill cup with water about 2/3 of the way.
  2. Combine base ingredients: baking soda, dish soap, and washable paint in cup.
  3. Get your camera out and ready to shoot.
  4. Stand back. Countdown from 3 and slowly pour the vinegar into the cup.
  5. SNAP all the pictures of their reactions because they will be priceless!
  6. Repeat the activity as many times as you want!

Team work makes the dream work.

This is our family motto. Danica first started saying it when she was 3 years old anytime we did stuff together. She always heard me say it and I explained to her what it meant. It melts my heart that she understands the meaning of the saying and that she loves working with her family team to get stuff done! #RAISEGOODHUMANS
Dylan was so excited he wanted to drink the glittery bubbly volcano & Dani didn’t want him to explode like a volcano so she quickly grabbed it, ha #minimom

That smile is why I do what I do…LOVE her.

I loved this activity because we had all the supplies already in our home, it was super easy to follow the steps and it was worth all the smiles & giggles.

Look how happy this little guy is. A morning full of volcano eruptions was a success #mybaby

The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it , question it and turn it inside out.

I love this activity so much and hope you can try it with your babes! This simple and easy activity brought so much joy to their little hearts! Let me know if you have any questions. xo , Dris

  1. omg!! the children are so cute and looking at them I can say they super enjoyed the activity. would love to try it out with my son. Just pinned it and will let you know how it went after I experiment with it.

    1. Thanks mama! I know I was wondering if my 1 year old would be interested and he loved it as well.

    1. Yes, I’m sure they will! I wanted to add rocks or play dough to form a shape of the volcano, but didn’t have any! Will definitely do this again with those added touches 🙂

  2. Fantastic idea! My grandson loves watching videos of volcanic eruptions. This would be a nice activity to do when he comes over for a visit. I was just wondering if I could use food color instead of washable paint?

    1. Thanks, yes you can use food coloring instead. I used washable paint in order to avoid their clothes from getting stained. If they were both older I would have used food coloring, but since I figured my 1 year old was potentially going to knock things down I went with washable paint 🙂

  3. Now this is an activity I could do with my boys since one likes being out doors and the other experiments and there’s apparently some bug food in my freezer for bugs to be fed tomorrow made my son ofcourse.

    1. YES! They would love it! Awe, my daughter loves bugs too! We plan to do this again and will add play dough and rocks to form the volcano shape!

  4. Awww. This looks so much fun! My daughter and niece will surely love this project. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Of course, I hope you get to do it with your daughter and niece they would love it!
